About Sport Ponies

Rachel Smith has many years experience working with horses and ponies. Originally an active member of the Essex Farmers and Union Pony Club; she spent two years training and competing at Waterstock House Training Centre under Yogi Breisner before working in a number of professional yards here and abroad.

In 1993 she set up her own yard at Prior Norton in Gloucestershire, where in addition to Sport Ponies, she offers breaking; schooling; short- and long-livery and holiday cover.

Rachel specialises in producing ponies from 13.2 up to 15.2, but is happy to take on any size and discipline.  Her ponies are carefully selected and competed by herself, her own children and other members of their Pony Club.  These ponies are typically with Rachel for around 6 months, although sometimes longer.  You will usually find a small selection, ranging from Pony Club all-rounders to proven BSJA, BD or BE ponies.

As a mother of two young Pony Club members, she is well aware of the difficulties often encountered in trying to find a suitable child’s pony.  Her main concern when training and selling a pony, is not just its suitability for handling and competing, but how child-friendly the pony must be, whether out hunting, on the road or in the stable.
